Yahoo! has been been providing web services since the early history of the internet, way back in 1995. The world’s sixth-most visited website, with an astonishing 7 billion monthly page views, Yahoo! runs a dedicated search engine, web portal, email service, groups service, advertising platform, video sharing platform and news site amongst a plethora of other products and services. This week the Sunnyvale, California-based company began for the first time to offer its users a range of crypto exchange and trading services via its mobile iOS app.
The Yahoo Finance app already offers a range of information and updates in finance, investment and the markets. The app is hugely popular for investors checking dedicated business and financial news, getting real-time quotes on stock and keeping track of their trading portfolios. It’s offered real-time Bitcoin price quotes since 2014, and last year updated the service to track around a hundred leading altcoins, but a recent Yahoo! blog post outlined a brand new feature – trading of four leading cryptos. Users can now buy and sell Bitcoin, Ether, Litecoin and Dogecoin on the mobile iOS version of the app. Yahoo! say they plan to roll the functionality out to Android and desktop soon.
The new service is the result of a partnership with API developer TradeIt, who are providing the infrastructure for the pioneering service. A similar trading service has been offered on the app for the past year, but this is the first time crypto has been included in iOS functionality. TradeIt, who offer a range of unified APIs specifically designed for app developers, are no novices in the crypto field, having previously worked with market leading broker and exchange Coinbase. Yahoo!, it would seem, are in safe hands with this new venture, which could be prove to be yet more huge news for the sector.
