Jimmy Wales says Wikipedia Crypto Integration will not happen! For the time being, Wikipedia Crypto Integration will not happen as the founder of Wikipedia has not found a practical use-case for the cryptocurrency.
Jimmy Wales was speaking opposite Craig Wright when he said that he has already turned down proposals from crypto advocates. He’s been asked in the past to consider making it possible for users to reward content creators and editors with digital assets.
“This is a really bad idea. It’s an idea that doesn’t actually work,” Wales said. “If you take something that is a bad idea and put it on the blockchain, that doesn’t necessarily make it a good idea.”
Wales also added that Wikipedia relied on volunteer experts and enthusiasts to add and edit new content, fact check, and remove inaccurate or irrelevant material. By adopting cryptocurrencies and integrating them, Wikipedia would be “taking a step back” by making it easier for people and companies to pay for content that they want to see on the platform.
“Creating a mechanism where you effectively authenticate that type of behavior … isn’t going to help with the quality of Wikipedia at all,” Wales said.
While Wales has an issue with incentives for Wikipedia posters, he had no such qualms of accepting donations in the form of cryptocurrency.
Wikipedia is a charity and has accepted donations in Bitcoin since 2014. CoinGeek’s conference in London was criticized for hosting Wales – who in turn criticized CoinGeek for implying he had endorsed Bitcoin Satoshi’s Vision (BSV). He later replied on Twitter that there was “zero chance” that BSV would be used on Wikipedia.
