The news follows the UN Climate Talks ending in a stalemate last week. The issues of setting rules for a new global carbon trading market and adopting new and ambitious emissions reduction targets fell short of organizers expectations.
The Financial Times even reported that the conference descended into “open bickering” in the final hours of the negotiations. China and the United States were lackluster participants and contributors. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres tweeted his disappointment in the results of #COP25.
Sun’s announcement to support Thunberg was greeted with disdain. Many respondents labeled the activist as a poster child or puppet for the climate cause – while others dismissed her as a fraud. Others outright mocked Sun, accusing him of trying to “get in on the monetization of compulsory carbon credits” or trying to pump the value of the Tron token.
