Samsung Galaxy S10 Cryptocurrency Support confirmed! Samsung, the largest smartphone manufacturer in the world by market share, has announced that their newest flagship phone will include secure storage for cryptocurrency private keys.
The Galaxy S10 will come equipped with dedicated “secure storage” designed for cryptocurrency private keys. This news has rustled social media and has caused quite a stir in the crypto community.
The news was announced on Feb 21st when Samsung announced details of the phone’s new features and upgrades. Among the other features of the S10 includes an upgraded camera system, 256GB of storage, 8GB of RAM and the ability to wirelessly charge other phones.
But the feature that piqued the most interest is Samsung’s proprietary defense platform, Samsung Knox. The platform will enable the S10 to have secure private key storage specifically made for blockchain-enabled mobile services.
More details are being awaited, anxiously, by the crypto community regarding Samsung Knox. The S10 has not hit the markets yet, so use cases for Samsung Knox and the scope of its capabilities are not yet known at this time.
We have mentioned how Samsung might be working on cryptocurrency/blockchain features for its newest offerings a few months ago. Back in December, SamMobile was one of the first to suggest that the S10 could come with crypto friendly features.
The rumors began once Samsung’s patent filings around blockchain were discovered. At the time, Samsung declined to comment and called the information “rumor and speculation”. It seems those attempts to quash rumor and speculation were, in fact, false.
Samsung is not the first company to put forth a cryptocurrency friendly smartphone and support for the cryptocurrency market. But it’s not facing that much competition. The two offerings outside the S10 are HTC’s Exodus 1 and Sidon Labs’ Finney. Both are experiencing limited sales.
The Exodus 1 can only be bought with cryptocurrency while Finney has suffered from the company’s reputation for having low quality hardware.
Samsung’s support for cryptocurrency indicates that wider recognition of the technology is occurring and considering the size and reach of the giant, it’s quite possible that it will further spur adoption of the technology.
What do you think? Is Samsung’s foray into cryptocurrency friendly smartphones yet another sign of progress in mass adoption?
