John McAfee arrested and charged! John McAfee arrested and charged by the United States Justice Department. He’s indicted for tax evasion, and was arrested in Spain.
The tax division unsealed an indictment from June 15th claiming that he failed to file tax returns from 2014 to 2018.
McAfee is also facing charges from the SEC for his cryptocurrency promoting. In a press release, the SEC explains that the charges are for McAfee promoting Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) without admitting that he was getting paid for them. They allege that he was paid as much $23 million dollars for it.
The charges allege that McAfee publicly promoted ICOs for payment for years while claiming he wasn’t being paid until admitting in 2018 that he was, in fact, receiving compensation. Jimmy Watson Jr., his body guard, is also facing charges for helping transfer and convert McAfee received as payment.
If convicted, McAfee faces up to five years in jail on each of the five counts of Tax Evasion, as well as one year and a fine of $100,000 for failing to file.
