One story we hear a lot in Crypto is people getting scammed, phished or hacked. It seems to happen quite a bit from big-name Youtubers to just your normal traders or investors. It is an unfortunate part of people being involved in a system or technology that they may not fully understand. A lot of people have jumped into Crypto from an investment standpoint without further educating themselves with computers or security.
One of the things that all trusted exchanges utilize now is 2FA-2 factor authentification, which means you have to have 2 different types of verification when you log into your account. One can be your normal password and another is a random number generator like googles authenticator.
I want to mention one that seems obvious but maybe one that some people don’t pay attention to, and thats HTTPS. HTTPS utilizes SSL which is a secure and cryptographic form of security. When you’re logging into a website specifically and exchange it is always important to pay attention to that secure button on the left of the address. If that isn’t there then usually its a question mark letting you know the website is not secure.
If you google search an exchange such as bittrex, on the top of the search you will sometimes see an add for that exchange. I wouldn’t recommend ever clicking on ads when you’re looking for something in crypto as sometimes these can be phishing scams.
Another common one is phishing emails that ask you to log into Bittrex or another exchange. Because bittrex requires you to validate yourself through an email, these fake emails have been circulating the web in the past. If you go login through the link provided on a phishing email then those people now have your login and password info.
