A cryptocurrency Samsung smartphone is one step closer to becoming reality with Samsung’s most recent trademark filing. Simply titled “Samsung Crypto Wallet”, the trademark UK00003363431 doesn’t give too much detail, but the trademark in of itself lends credence to the rumors that Samsung is preparing itself to enter the cryptocurrency industry.
Two immediate questions come to mind for cryptocurrency users – is Samsung developing a stand-alone wallet or an integrated wallet on their smartphones, and is the trademark for defensive or offensive purposes – IE, does Samsung plan on developing the device or are they preventing others from doing so?
Filing patents like Samsung’s most recent is common practice. In fact, patent filing has become prolific, with trademark registration following closely. Few of the filed patents will actually result in a product, however. To give you some perspective, 42 trademarks from Samsung were also filed alongside the cryptocurrency one.
The current offerings by Samsung and Apple continue to offer technical improvements, however, features are becoming less frequent. Samsung’s integration of a cryptocurrency wallet would allow Samsung to distinguish itself from its competitors, such as Apple, and offer something new and truly innovative. It would also give us, the cryptocurrency user base, a reason to consider Samsung and their smartphone.
Samsung has a pretty low bar to overcome in terms of cryptocurrency friendly devices. Charlie Lee’s HTC Exodus has been delayed, once again, while Sirin’s Finney smartphone has been derided for being clunky and unrefined when compared to other smartphones. No doubt that Samsung, should they enter the race, will be the dominant force to be reckoned with in terms of cryptocurrency smartphones.
