Simpsons Teaches Crypto to the masses! The Simpsons teaches crypto via their newest episode, titled “Frinkcoin”. The episode was listed on Fox on Feb 24th and features “TV’s most beloved scientist”, Jim Parsons.
The show is significant insofar as it reaches every day Americans and viewers, and breaks down the idea of a distributed consensus-based cryptocurrency in a way that anyone can understand.
“For cryptocurrencies to work, we need a record of every transaction that occurs. These are recorded in what’s called a distributed ledger” says Parsons.
An animated ledger book sings, in a slow blues style, a good portion of the tutorial.
“I’m a consensus of shared and synchronized digital data spread across multiple platforms from Shanghai to Grenada. Each day I’m closer to being cash of the future. Not in your wallet, I’m in your computer.”
Parsons continues, saying:
“When you use the currency, the transaction is recorded in the ledger… and when one ledger book gets filled up, we add to a chain of previous books – that’s the blockchain.”
Parsons confirmed through a press release that he was the who voiced himself for the episode. The episode also featured Professor Frink as the subject of a Lisa Simpson school essay – he created his own cryptocurrency called the “Frinkcoin”. In tongue-and-cheek, he becomes richer than Mr. Burns.
The episode ended by saying, “Also, we know who Satoshi is, but we’re not telling.”
