CCN shutting down! CCN, one of the largest crypto news dailies announced that CCN shutting down was due to the latest Google Searches update. They shut down yesterday, June 10th.
The announcement was made by Jonas Borchgrevink, the director and founder of CCN markets and Hawkfish AS. The crypto news site saw traffic fall over 71% due to Google’s Core update.
He also noted that traffic levels, while low in the past, indicated that CCN could not move forward as a viable business after these conditions had been set by Google. He cited research and data from Sistrix.com, that also noted CoinDesk seeing a 34.6% drop. CPI telegraph saw 21.1% drops from mobile searches as well.
Borchgrevink states that the CCN team will move to HVY.com, a news platform for journalists.
He also noted that crypto websites weren’t the only ones affected by the Google Update. British Tabloid The Daily Mail has also seen a significant drop in visibility.
Some have speculated that “clickbait” headlines are behind the loss of visibility for The Daily Mail, which has seen almost half of its organic website traffic lost.
However, the announcement notes that the reasoning behind certain sites losing visibility is not able to be determined:
“Unless someone – anyone – who actually worked on the June 2019 Core Update at Google explains what is going on, all we can do is to ‘guess, speculate, and experiment’ as far as our bank accounts allow us to.”
CryptoCoinNews was first started 6 years ago, before rebranding as CCN.
“If Google thinks that CCN, all of a sudden — remember, literally overnight —, is bad, then why not give us the chance to understand the why and give us a way to change before any major update. Instead, we are kicked in the teeth overnight with zero knowledge of what we have done wrong, impacting a team of 60+ people. 6 years of work is evaporated.”
CCN’s swan song called for Google to implement a 3 month notice of expected changes from Google Core Updates, explaining what the company can do to change if it is expected that they’ll fall into a risk zone for losing traffic, and have a multi-international apolitical task force to inspect search engine updates for “the conservation of our democracies, our freedom of speech, our freedom of the press, and our freedom of information”.
