eBay adopting cryptocurrency – that’s the latest rumor to float around the cryptoverse. Banners at the Consensus conference in New York suggests eBay is readying itself to support “virtual currencies” and “digital collectables”.
The images were first seen on the Telegram channel @PatronsOfTheMoon, but they have yet to be confirmed by eBay. If they are legitimate, however, it will open cryptocurrencies to 180 million active buyers. Is eBay adopting cryptocurrency – only time will tell!
The bidding marketplace may also be looking towards digital collectables, such as Cryptokitties, which skyrocketed to popularity in late 2017. Digital collectables were first made possible by using the Ethereum blockchain.
eBay’s status as a marketplace for collectable items and auctions positions itself as a natural platform for digital collectables.

There is no official statement on its crypto plans from eBay, however, eBay does have connections with bitcoin payment gateway UTRUST.
UTRUST has hired Sanja Kon as their VP of Global Partnership – Sanja Kon was a former eBay and PayPal executive. It makes sense that a partnership between UTRUST and eBay would be logical.
We are excited to announce that we have a new team member. The former @PayPal and @eBay executive Sanja Kon joins @UTRUST, as VP of Global Partnerships.

In a statement at the time, UTRUST said:
“Sanja’s experience at PayPal and eBay makes her the perfect person to help UTRUST drive merchant adoption of our crypto payments platform… We anticipate that she will be a key driver in elevating UTRUST’s brand in the crypto-commerce space and ultimately the future of online payments industry.”
This isn’t the first time that we’ve heard of eBay toying with the idea of accepting crypto payments. Scott Cutler, the Senior Vice President of eBay Americas in late 2017 said that the company was “seriously considering” adopting bitcoin payments.
eBay wasn’t the only big news to hit the wire from Consensus – Flexa, a New York based crypto payments company hinted at partnerships with Starbucks, Nike, and Bed, Bath, & Beyond at the conference. We should see Flexa’s app at today’s Consensus event.
